Why I recommend wearing SPF every day

Menopause Facial Oil

SPF is one of the most talked-about areas of skincare, and also one of the most confusing. There’s a lot of advice out there, and it can be difficult to know what actually matters. For me, I always come back to keeping things simple.

SPF is a daily essential, even here in Ireland.

It’s easy to assume we only need sun protection when we’re on holidays or spending long days outdoors, but that’s not the case. UVA rays, which are responsible for skin ageing, are present all year round. They can also pass through clouds and glass, meaning your skin is exposed even on overcast days or when you’re indoors near a window. In Ireland, UV levels can reach 6 or 7 in late spring and summer, which is high enough to cause damage to the skin. It’s just not something we always feel or notice. That’s why I always recommend wearing SPF every day, even if you’re not planning to spend much time outside.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Apply it as the final step in your morning routine, after cleansing, hydration, and any oils or balms. Give your skincare a moment to settle, then apply your SPF so it sits comfortably on the skin.

If you are outdoors for longer periods, it’s important to reapply throughout the day. Like anything in skincare, consistency matters more than perfection. Small, daily habits will always have more impact than doing everything perfectly once in a while.

At the same time, it’s important to support the skin underneath. As we move through different stages of life, particularly during peri-menopause and menopause, skin can become drier, more sensitive, and less resilient. That’s where your skincare comes in. At that point, protection and nourishment go hand in hand. If you are navigating this stage, you might find our Menopause range helpful, particularly for supporting hydration and comfort alongside daily SPF use.

My approach has always been to support the skin with gentle, natural formulations that work with it, not against it. Hydration, nourishment, and a strong skin barrier all help the skin to feel more comfortable and balanced. SPF is one part of that routine. It protects what you’re working to care for. And when used consistently alongside simple, supportive skincare, it can make a real difference over time.
