Why your hands deserve daily attention
Hands tell a story
Our hands do a lot for us.
They’re constantly at work, washing, cooking, gardening, cleaning, typing, caring for others. They’re exposed to water, weather and everyday wear and tear, yet they’re often the last thing we think about when it comes to skincare. Usually, it’s only when our hands start to feel dry or uncomfortable that we reach for something.
At Hawthorn, I believe hand care deserves the same attention as facial care. Not as an indulgence, but as a simple way to support skin that works hard for us, day in and day out.
Why hands need daily care
The skin on the backs of our hands is thinner and produces less oil than other areas of the body. This is often where ageing shows first. They’re exposed daily and rarely protected, yet we expect them to keep working hard. Add frequent hand washing, sanitising, cold air, wind and household tasks, and it’s easy to see why hands can quickly become dry or sensitive. Supporting the skin barrier early and consistently helps maintain comfort, suppleness and resilience over time.
A little regular care helps protect the skin barrier, keeping hands comfortable and resilient rather than trying to repair them once they’re already sore. Hand care doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. In fact, simple routines are often the easiest to stick to.
A gentle rhythm might include:
Washing hands with something that gently cleans without stripping
Exfoliating occasionally to remove built-up dry skin
Using a nourishing balm regularly, especially after washing and before bed
Small habits, done consistently, make the biggest difference.
How I use the Soothe Handcare range
The Soothe Handcare Range was created to support dry, sensitive and hardworking hands using 100% natural ingredients. Like all Hawthorn products, everything is handmade in small batches in our studio on the family farm in the west of Ireland. This range is especially suited to hands that are frequently washed, exposed to the elements or feeling drier and more sensitive with age.
Daily
I cleanse with the Soothe Hand + Body Wash and apply a small amount of Soothe Hand Balm after washing my hands.
Weekly
Once a week, I use the Soothe Hand Scrub, followed by the balm while my skin is still warm.
Evening
Before bed, I massage the balm into clean hands, paying particular attention to my knuckles, nails and cuticles.
As skin changes over time, particularly through perimenopause and menopause, hands can become drier, thinner and more sensitive. Supporting them with nourishing, natural products can make everyday life feel more comfortable.
Hand care doesn’t need to be an afterthought. It’s a small, practical act of self‑care that honours the work your hands do.
Your hands tell your story. They deserve to be cared for.
Soothe Hand + Body Wash
This is a gentle, naturally foaming wash that cleanses effectively without leaving skin feeling tight or dry. It’s made without harsh detergents and is designed to respect the skin’s natural balance.
Scented with calming Lavender and refreshing Eucalyptus, it leaves hands and body feeling clean, comfortable and refreshed. It’s suitable for daily use and kind to sensitive skin.
Soothe Hand Scrub
Our hand scrub is designed to gently smooth rough, dry skin and help hands feel soft again. Himalayan Salt exfoliates while Shea Butter, Apricot Oil and Rice Bran Oil help replenish moisture as you massage it in.
The combination of Peppermint and Lavender essential oils leaves hands feeling refreshed and soothed. I recommend using it once a week, or whenever your hands need a little extra care.
Soothe Hand Balm
This is a deeply nourishing, 100% natural hand balm for dry, hardworking hands. Made with Mango Butter, Shea Butter and Castor Oil, it helps soften skin, protect the barrier and support dry cuticles and nails.
Scented with Lavender and Ylang Ylang, it melts into the skin without feeling greasy. It’s perfect for keeping by the sink, in your bag, or applying generously before bed.
