World Bee Day

Celebrating World Bee Day at Hawthorn Handmade Skincare

We are celebrating World Bee Day on May 20th. Bees along with other pollinators sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce. One of our favourite bee-friendly plants AND skincare ingredients is Borage.

Borage Seed Oil has a high content of GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid), a key essential fatty acid. I love formulating with this powerhouse of a natural ingredient because it contains the necessary nutrients to repair damaged skin and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Hawthorn Skincare Products that contain Borage include:

Rejuvenate Facial Oil

This beautiful face oil is packed full of rich oils and essential fatty acids and is extremely beneficial for dry and mature skin.

Not only does it have Borage seed oil which is an essential fatty acid it also has Avocado Oil, Rosehip Oil and Plum Oil which all promote hydration, and rejuvenation and are rich in antioxidants.

Menopause Face Balm

This balm is part of our new range which has been formulated to help alleviate skin issues during perimenopause and menopause. This exciting menopause product nourishes your senses with geranium which helps to balance the hormones and Clary essential oils known to lift mood and balance hormones.

Along with Borage the Menopause Face Balm also contains Bakuchiol which promotes the reduction of wrinkles and pigmentation and Vitamin E Oil which is an antioxidant and helps prevent premature aging.

Calm Balm

One of the most luxurious body care and sustainable skincare products, Calm Balm, is a multi-purpose product which has ingredients for calming the mind and the body.

It includes natural ingredients/organic ingredients such as shea butter, which is known for its antioxidant and rejuvenating properties, hemp seed oil, which is deeply hydrating and balancing, and beeswax, which is a humectant and helps to lock in moisture. It also contains clary and geranium, which balances emotions and helps to lift the mood.

Borage, Borago Officinalis L., is incredibly easy to grow and provides an exceptional amount of nectar and pollen. I have sown it all around the studio and when in full bloom; the place is buzzing with bees. Also known as Starflower, its delicate blue flowers can garnish salads and drinks. Here are a few tips on growing your own bee-friendly Borage.

  • Ideally, Borage grows best in a well-drained sunny spot.

  • Sow seeds outside directly into soil.

  • Self-seeds readily or collect seed and sow the following spring.

  • Plants that have finished flowers at the end of summer can be removed and composted.
